Silica Fume Sourcing Pitfall Guide Under Fluctuating Market Price

Silica fume is a by-product from silicon-metal production. Its supply volume changes according to smelter operating rate, resulting in periodic price fluctuation. Chasing extremely low price during a tight market may lead to downgraded quality and non-conforming goods.

Product Notes

  1. When market supply is tight, some suppliers mix different grades. Goods marked SiO₂ 96% may show unstable actual test data. Always ask for a batch test report and arrange incoming inspection. Refractory castable customers face high risk here; unstable silica fume indexes may cause large-scale rejection of finished castables.
  2. Confirm densification grade: undensified, semi-densified or fully densified. Some export quotations simply name silica fume without marking densification status. Undensified silica fume shows low unit price but low container loading capacity. Total cost will surge when ocean freight rises.

Price & Commercial Notes

  1. Distinguish spot price and forward contract price. Spot price changes quickly with the market. A price-locked contract helps control cost during a price-rising period, while buyers need to verify the supplier’s production capacity to avoid delivery delay.
  2. Be cautious about quotations far below the normal market range. Unusually low offers usually sacrifice purity, moisture or loss-on-ignition indexes. Potential quality-risk cost outweighs raw-material saving.
  3. Confirm trade terms clearly: Ex-works, FOB or CIF. Clarify who covers inland trucking, customs clearance, ocean freight and insurance to avoid hidden extra charges.

Shandong Boken Energy maintains stable raw-material supply with consistent batch-to-batch performance for all silica fume grades. Batch inspection certificates are available. We support spot full-container shipment and price-locked long-term orders. Pre-shipment sample testing is offered to help customers balance cost and quality amid market volatility, ensuring stable production for concrete and monolithic refractory castables.
