Silica Fume Procurement: Analysis of Product Specifications & Price-Affecting Factors
Many buyers focus only on per-ton quotation. However, the real total cost of silica fume depends on technical specifications, packaging, order size and transportation. Comparing unit price blindly may lead to wrong product selection.
From Product Perspective
1. SiO₂ purity is the key factor for price difference. Grade with SiO₂ 85-90% has lower price, mainly used as ordinary concrete filler. SiO₂ 92-94% is mainstream general grade for most concrete projects. High-purity silica fume with SiO₂ ≥96% features higher activity and fewer impurities, widely used for refractory castables and marine high-performance concrete. Its sorting and production cost is higher, so selling price is obviously higher than standard grades.
2. Densification status greatly influences total cost. Undensified silica fume has the lowest ex-factory price, yet low bulk density reduces container loading capacity and pushes up ocean freight, so it is not suitable for export. Semi-densified silica fume balances dispersibility and loading capacity and is popular for domestic refractories and UHPC projects. Fully densified silica fume has high bulk density, maximizes container loading and lowers freight cost. Though its ex-factory price is higher, it delivers the best total landed cost for long-distance sea shipment and is the top choice for overseas clients.
3. Impurity control creates premium. Premium silica fume with low LOI, low carbon and low moisture requires strict raw-material screening, customized for the refractory industry with a reasonable premium. Ordinary concrete projects can adopt standard grades to control budget without over-specifying impurity indexes.
From Order & Commercial Perspective
- Small trial orders or sample lots come with higher per-ton price; full container bulk orders enjoy volume discount.
- 25kg small paper bags cost more than jumbo bags. Jumbo bags are cost-effective for export. Custom moisture-proof liners and printed shipping marks bring minor extra charges.
- Prices differ greatly among ex-works, FOB port and CIF destination port. Always confirm trade terms when comparing offers.
Shandong Boken Energy suggests never chasing a low price without considering working conditions. Using low-grade silica fume for high-temperature refractory application will cause cracking and pores in finished products, resulting in far bigger loss than money saved on raw materials. We recommend cost-effective grades according to your project conditions and provide samples and test certificates to balance performance and budget.
