Silica Fume Selection & Cost Control for Different Application Scenarios
Higher grade does not always equal better result. Best cost-performance comes from matching product to working condition. Blindly buying ultra-high-purity grade wastes budget, while under-spec material brings quality risk.
High-Performance Concrete
Requirement: SiO₂ ≥92% with stable loss on ignition. Semi-densified or fully densified material is suitable for domestic use; fully densified silica fume is preferred for export to cut ocean freight.
Cost control: For ordinary inland bridges, SiO₂ >96% ultra-high-purity grade is unnecessary. Upgrade to high-purity grade only for chloride-affected or marine environments. Place full-container bulk orders to reduce unit cost.
Monolithic Refractory Castables & Precast Refractory Blocks
Requirement: The refractory system is highly sensitive to silica fume activity, purity and impurities. SiO₂ ≥96% high-activity silica fume is recommended. Strictly control LOI and carbon content to prevent blistering and cracking under high temperature. Densified silica fume offers good flowability for castable construction.
Cost control: Do not over-chase low price for refractory raw material. Inferior silica fume may cause lining spalling and shorten furnace service cycle. Later maintenance cost will far exceed the raw-material price gap. Long-term supply contract helps secure stable stock and contract price.
General Filling & Common Precast Components
Requirement: These applications have lower demand for pozzolanic activity and high-temperature properties. SiO₂ 85-90% grade is acceptable.
Cost control: Adopt standard grade as long as test requirements are satisfied, avoid over-specification and keep cost within a reasonable range.
Please distinguish ex-works price and freight-included price when receiving quotations. Some ex-works offers look very low, yet high ocean or inland truck freight pushes up total landed cost. Shandong Boken Energy recommends a suitable silica fume grade based on your formula and laboratory trial results, avoiding both over-specification and insufficient performance to balance product quality and purchasing cost.
